Dead in the water
After our plea of “Show us your code” it turns out that too many of you have been stuck in the galleys and basements doing actual work and have had no time for play. As such, unfortunately, our 2009 “Boring Games are Dead” competition has had to be called to a halt (just not enough players, participants and free time). We would love to be able to run it next year, but maybe our timing was off? Give us your feedback or ideas of how we could really make this happen next year please! Leave a comment and fill in our poll.

We launched our community driven competition, “Boring Games are Dead”, at DevDays09 and we had awesome attendance for the sessions, however so far it’s been real quiet on the registration front.
This is a little bit of a ‘coo-ee – anybody there?’ request and to check if any of you have managed to get cracking on some killer games, or if work pressure has forced you all into “do not disturb” mode?
If you’re still keen on entering, please register on our site before 10 June 2009. We need at least 25 entrants (Unfortunately submitting 25 versions of the same game won’t cut it, we need 25 separate entrants and/or teams), else we will need to cancel the competition and retry next year.

Some fresh questions
Check FAQ for updates, but we’ve had some queries around using Silverlight and “here’s one I made last year” – just answering those as they come up. Keep coding – time is moving on. Come on guys (and girls and Zombie Kitty enthusiasts) – Easter Weekend is PRIME TIME to catch up on your own code!

Competition Date Change
Hi all. We’ve got to change the competition dates to accommodate the Tech-Ed South Africa 2009 dates. We’ve had to bring the closing date forward to end June 2009, so we’ve got time for judging etc. So, slightly shorter dev time – only 3 months. Get coding (and hopping, skipping, jumping, exploding your game worlds). Look forward to seeing your entries.

Boring Games are Dead!

The 2009 “Boring Games are Dead” Challenge has begun. We call on you to develop a game for PC using XNA Game Studio, Visual Studio and/or the Expression Studio tools.
In a nutshell:
- The game that’s the most FUN to play, WINS.
- The competition starts on the 10th of March 2009 and entries close on the 30th June 2009.
- Final game development for Windows only (sorry, no Xbox this time round).
- The creator of the winning game wins a trip to Tech-Ed South Africa 2009, subject to the completion of an affidavit of eligibility;
- Because all judging is done by community developers, we will also be awarding a prize to one of the ‘judges’.
- You can start playing games as soon as they’re uploaded, but you can vote only once. For this reason voting starts on the 1st of July 2009 and finishes on 10th of July 2009.
- The winner will be announced on the 13th of July 2009
For full rules and guidelines, read ‘about’ the competition.
